‘Inspiration Day’: Induction for ‘Challenge Champions'.
4 January - 25 March 2010
The challenge starts: pupils begin to source the information for the ECO Calculator (the Excel spreadsheet's available in Resources). Then they're all set to create a 24-hour ecological and carbon footprint for their school.
Teachers also have access to activities and fact sheets, which they can use as much or as little as they like. Pupils and teachers can then use the accumulated footprint information to start thinking of ways to redesign an aspect of their school, in order to reduce its footprint and environmental impact. These ways will probably be related to use of transport, energy, water, food and use of waste.
This could be any aspect of the school, for example:
- Something inside the school
- Something outside the school
- A product used in the school or community
- A service used by the school or community
- A communication in or outside the school
- An initiative in or outside of the school
Other ideas
The group then develops a design brief for the ideas they wish to submit, and they use the Eco Design Challenge ‘design brief’ activity as a template.
Submissions must include:
Completed ECO Calculator (spreadsheet format)
Design briefs for redesigning an aspect of the school
Output visual from the ECO Flash Calculator
Design briefs, ECO calculator and school visualisation image (from Flash ECO calculator) must be emailed to the Edc team by 5pm on 25th March 2010.
19 April - June 2010
Where appropriate and possible, mentors will be selected to visit schools and help develop the pupils' ideas. The Eco Design Challenge cannot guarantee that every school will be visited by a mentor, but will try to match as many schools as possible. Teachers and mentors will have the opportunity to liaise, to agree the best time and type of activity for the pupils and school prior to any visit.
25 June 2010
Final submissions: submissions may include models / prototypes of a manageable size (i.e. easily handled by one person) and a presentation on boards, to illustrate the design brief, design process and the designs that have been developed. Please also supply a digital copy, preferably as a high resolution PDF.
Submission should include input from the designer's visit, where possible.
July 2010
Winners will be announced during celebration event at Tremough Campus, University College Falmouth (to be confirmed).
The Eco design challenge retains the right to amend or change the dates of the challenge at any point.
Don't forget to read the Rules. Good luck!
